Beli - The Roman Bridge

A bridge built during the Roman Empire stands at the entrance to Beli, a village on Cres island. Its estimated age is about 2.000 years. It was counstructed with stone blocks which are stacked together so perfectly that the whole bridge seems as if it were carved out of a single large piece of rock.
The bridge is 8 meters long and is the only preserved bridge on our coast from that period. In antiquity, there was a port in the bay below Beli. Many ships were coming to this port. The unloaded cargo would then be transported to other settlements on Cres. Transportation of products was possible because of this ancient bridge. The route of the new road to Beli goes around the Roman bridge; however, the bridge still stands as a witness to the old times.
